Steven Soderbergh will help Matt Reeves finish ‘The Batman 2’

While Steven Soderbergh steps in to help wrap up filming on “The Batman Part II,” director Matt Reeves continues to deal with a personal matter.

“As Matt Reeves continues to deal with an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, who admires Matt’s work, has approached Matt and, with the full support of DC Studios, will step in to help the writer-director complete principal photography on the final weeks of ‘The Batman Part 2,'” the studio said in a statement on Thursday, first reported by Deadline. “Matt and Steven will work closely with the cast and crew to realize Matt’s vision for the film.”

DC Studios chief James Gunn confirmed the news on social media on Thursday and reiterated that Reeves remains the director of “The Batman Part II.”

“Matt is still the director of The Batman 2 and always will be,” he wrote on Threads. “I can’t tell you how grateful and impressed we are with Steven’s offer to help him complete his vision.”

The announcement follows news earlier this month that production on the film had been temporarily halted so Reeves could focus on family matters.

“Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing our journey soon,” the studio said in a statement at the time.

The writer-director also expressed his gratitude on social media on Thursday and confirmed that he will continue his work on “The Batman 2.”

“To be clear, I’m not leaving The Batman Part II,” Reeves wrote in a post on X. “I am deeply grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography. Thank you all for your interest and good wishes.”

Soderbergh expressed his appreciation for Reeves’ work when addressing his new role in a widely reported statement on Thursday.

“I thought Matt Reeves’ work on ‘The Batman’ was stunning; it was deliberate, specific and incredibly consistent,” he said in a statement first reported by Deadline. “The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to create images that will integrate seamlessly with what has already been shot so Matt can properly complete his film.”

Robert Pattinson will once again appear in the role of Gotham’s iconic Caped Crusader in the new movie, which is the sequel to Reeves’ 2022 reboot movie “The Batman”. Filming on “The Batman Part II” began in London in June after several previous delays, with Reeves and Mattson writing the script for Tomlin. The film is planned to be released on February 18, 2028.
