Police in South Carolina have closed the investigation into the overdose death of actor Hayden Panettiere after the medical examiner determined it was accidental.
Greenville police said in a statement Wednesday that the decision was based on the medical examiner’s findings and the findings of the investigation.
Panettiere, who starred in the TV series “Heroes” and “Nashville,” was pronounced dead in a Greenville apartment at the age of 36 on Aug. 16 after paramedics found her unresponsive.
A coroner’s report obtained by The Associated Press last month said his death was caused by an accidental overdose of several drugs, including fentanyl, and that he had been in rehab just weeks before. Her occasional boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach Hickerson, were home.
It remains unclear whether federal authorities will still review the case separately. Panettiere’s ex-fiancé, former boxer Wladimir Klitschko, said in a petition filed in a California court last month that some of her property was taken by federal law enforcement investigating her death and by an unnamed unrelated person who wanted to sell it.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration did not immediately respond to emailed requests for comment Wednesday, and Greenville police Sgt. Diana Munoz said she could not comment on whether any other agencies were investigating.
A California court granted Klitschko legal status this month to protect the assets of his 11-year-old daughter, Panettiere’s sole heir.
In her memoir “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” published in May, Panettiere admitted that she became addicted to alcohol and suffered postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter in 2014. The girl began living with Klitschko full-time when she was 2 years old.
Panettiere’s father told investigators that at the time of Panettiere’s death, he was planning to visit his daughter in Ukraine a few days later.
