Janelle Monae’s Transformation into a Creepy, Fish-Like Creature is a True Halloween Dream

Janelle Monae’s costumes are always a showstopper when it comes to Halloween.

This year, the singer and actor introduced an original character, “Phish Boy,” as part of his costume. And the shy, half-fish, half-human specimen that made its grand debut at the star’s “Wondaween” Halloween festival in Los Angeles on Oct. 29 is terrifyingly impressive.

The costume featured a hyperrealistic fish head, webbed hands, and a striped outfit with suspenders. From the fins affixed to Monae’s disturbingly perfect fish head to her exaggerated collars, no striking detail was missing in the ensemble.

The artist even created a persona for this man. Phish Boy appeared as a nervous Nellie.

“I have a little bit of stage fright,” the “Creature” said in the costume video. “They say I’ll grow out of it when I grow up.”

Monae was dressed as the character for this year’s Wondaween Creature Carnival, held at the Santa Monica Pier. The event, which was held for the first time last year, invites guests to go crazy with their own interpretations of the creature theme. Monae, who made a big costume show at the festival, also performed for those who attended the party.

The artist explained that staying in character was not an easy task, especially due to the tight head part of the costume.

“Nobody knows this, but I’m claustrophobic,” the singer told Yahoo Entertainment. “I choose to be brave and transform. This is a season of shedding for me. It’s: ‘How can I get to the next version of Janelle?'”

He added that fans are “watching everything happen right now” when it comes to his new era.

The Halloween fun didn’t end at the festival either. Monae appeared on the “Jennifer Hudson Show” on October 30 and absolutely rocked the show’s iconic soul tunnel with her fishy looks.

While Monae’s Halloween Day costume was another terrifying display of madness, the festivities continued — in the best way, of course.

On October 31, the singer released a video introducing Mother Creature, a frightening monster developed with the help of special effects and costume teams. He told the Los Angeles Times that he will host a private party titled “Creature Camp” on All Hallows Eve.
