Liam Neeson Talks About Meryl Streep Playing Aslan in Narnia: ‘Nobody Is Better’

Liam Neeson is supportive of Meryl Streep taking over the role of Aslan in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming “Narnia” movie — even though she’s just learning about it.

Neeson, who voiced the legendary lion in the original “Chronicles of Narnia” film trilogy, admitted in a recent interview with ScreenRant that he was unaware of the new adaptation. When asked if he had seen the trailer, Neeson replied: “Sorry, this is news to me.”

In Gerwig’s “Narnia: The Sorcerer’s Nephew,” Streep voices Aslan, who created the world of Narnia and is often seen as the incarnation of Christ. When ScreenRant broke the news to Neeson that Streep would be playing the role, he responded: “Meryl playing Jesus Christ? Well, if you’re going to make Jesus a lady, no one is better than Meryl.”

Regarding casting Streep as Leo, Gerwig told Empire: “I wanted someone who was deep but not pretentious, dignified but without a dour personal seriousness. I wanted someone who could convey depth and emotion as well as joy and pleasure. I wanted someone who was older than 70, so she had the wisdom of experience, but also had the capacity, like a child, to create new miracles. And at the same time, to be one of the best actors to ever do that. The list is not very long.”

Aside from Aslan’s appearance in this version, with colorful eyes and a red-striped face, he said that David Bowie was the inspiration for the essence of the film, which he described as “big and gripping” and had a “rock opera” feel.

“Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew” will be released in theaters on February 12, 2027, followed by a release on Netflix on April 2.
