9-1-1’s Oliver Stark Defends Buck’s Parenting Choice for Theo

9-1-1‘s Oliver Stark He came to the defense of his character as the series continued to throw in surprising twists, such as Buck considering giving up custody of his son.

In the Thursday, Nov. 5 episode of the hit ABC show, Buck (Stark) was buckling under the pressure of caring for his 4-year-old son, Theo. The two did not adjust well to living together, especially since Buck refused to parent Theo.

This caused Theo to throw a tantrum at the park, which caused some parents to call the police on Buck. He realized that the problem was that Theo saw him not as a father, but as a temporary caretaker after the loss of his parents.

After talking to Eddie (Ryan Guzman), Buck said he thought it would be better if he didn’t look after Theo anymore.

“It’s important to remember that everything Buck does is done with the best of intentions,” Stark, 35, told Us exclusively about Buck’s journey this season. “He’s making decisions every day in this new role he finds himself in. He always thinks it’s the right decision, and obviously we’ve seen that it doesn’t always happen, and he’s struggling with that.”

The actor urged viewers to be patient with Buck. “Like any new parent, which is the role she’s in now, you figure it out as you go along,” she told us. “No one is ever good at anything right away. You have to make some mistakes and learn along the way; that’s just part of the process he’s in right now.”

He continued: “This is a particularly difficult situation. There’s a lot of trauma. I’m sure there’s some guilt for Buck as well. He may not be making the right choices every step of the way, but he’s making them with the best of intentions.”

Stark said he’s excited about what the new release could lead to.

“Any anxiety I experience [about the story line] when I first heard this [vanished] “After last season,” he said. “I was all in and continue to be. I love working with the twins who play Theo. I’m really excited for the growth this will mean for Buck; I’m really excited to see her reflected in so many ways, to see how it can make her look at herself, how she can grow with that, and how it can bring different characters into her life. “I think this is a big step for him and I’m very excited about the story.”

9-1-1 ABC airs Thursdays at 8pm ET.
