Following the tragedy, mourners visited the scene on Sunday, October 11, placing candles, flowers and stuffed animals outside the home. Windham wore a T-shirt with pictures of Stone and their children that read “Forever in My Heart.”
“Words cannot explain what I am going through right now,” Windham said. “But I have to be strong for my community, you know what I mean? My family, my daughters, my sons, everyone.”
Eri Police Chief Rick Lorah He said authorities learned of the murders when neighbors heard muffled gunshots coming from inside. Roberts, 37, and Tanner, 51, who lived at different addresses, went to the house to see what was going on and started pounding on the door. Matthew then went outside and shot the women as they ran towards him.
It was confirmed that Roberts was a relative of the attacker, while Tanner was a family friend.
GoFundMe pages have since been created for some of the victims. On a page started to help Roberts’ family, it was revealed that Roberts was a mother of 5 children and engaged to her fiancée of 14 years. “His sudden loss has left his loved ones facing heartbreak and urgent financial needs during an unimaginable time,” the GoFundMe page said.
Meanwhile, Tanner’s GoFundMe page stated that Tanner “bravely tried to help a friend protect his family from a violent and dangerous individual.”
The donor claimed that Tanner was fatally shot while trying to save Roberts’ nephew during the shooting, and Roberts and Tanner are believed to be the last two people killed before the grandfather died by suicide.
It is not yet clear whether authorities believe Matthew had a motive in the murders.
