‘SNL’ Host Inde Navarrette Wins Halloween with Penis-Destroying Robot Drawing ‘The Inventor’s Wife’

After a rather weak cold open by Tom Hanks’ David S. Pumpkins, Donald Trump (who admits he “might be gay”) and his MAGA stooge Nicki Minaj, and a hilarious opening monologue in which host Inde Navarrette slaps Shane Gillis, the Halloween edition of “Saturday Night Live” aired a surprisingly entertaining skit called “The Inventor.”

The sketch begins with Navarrette delivering a eulogy for her deceased husband, an “eccentric” inventor who “spent his last days in his workshop building god knows what,” adding: “My husband loved his inventions, and he… loved his wife.”

When she returns home from the funeral, she finds that her husband has left a gift for his widow in his workshop: a cute, Wall-E-like robot named PD 44. The two become best friends, but can’t figure out what PD’s “purpose” is.

We jump six years into the future and Navarrette’s lonely widow is finally ready to date. She matches with a nice-looking guy named Tom Oakland (played by Ben Marshall) on a dating app, and the two go on a romantic date. They seem to be working like clockwork, and he takes her back to his house for a nightcap to meet PD – suddenly PD turns into a giant, menacing, killer robot, rips off Tom’s penis and throws it at the moon.

“Does PD stand for Penis Destroyer?” Navarrette’s widow screams before the robot shoots Tom until it explodes with a laser beam and covers him in blood.

“He loved me… After all, my husband loved me!” says the satisfied woman.

The sketch was a fine showcase for Navarrette’s crack timing and dedication to the piece, and was one of the best “SNL” digital shorts in a long time.
