Maya Hawke Will Star in the Movie ‘Magic: the Gathering’

Maya Hawke will star in “Magic: The Gathering,” a movie version of the wildly popular trading card game.

Hawke’s role has not been revealed. Plot details also remain under wraps, although the tabletop game is set in a wide variety of fantasy worlds and involves players acting as magicians known as Planeswalkers participating in a battle. According to Deadline, which first reported the news, Hawke is expected to portray a cast that has not yet been cast.

Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment are producing the live-action film, with Matt Johnson (“Blackberry,” “Nirvanna the Band the Show”) directing. Johnson, a long-time “Magic: The Gathering” fan, is also writing the script with Noah Gardner (“Super 8”) and Aidan Fitzgerald (“Calls”).

“I was x&0 with the good starters going into day 2 of GP Detroit and I was telling myself, ‘I’m going to drop out of film school and become a professional Magic player,’” Johnson said. “I’m sitting across from Rich Hoaen in the first stall. I’m x&5 in the fifth round and ducked so badly that I sacrificed Lifespinner and a lethal board (I’m serious) for a lone Jugan. My opponent goes for the last pitch Rend Spirit and within 10 minutes I’m back in Toronto thinking, ‘My Magic career is officially over.’ To all the dreamers reading this: There’s a 2-day deck in every pool.”

Hawke is known for Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and has also appeared in projects such as Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City,” Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s feature film “Do Revenge” and Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro.” She voiced Anxiety in Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.” He will next appear in Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: Harvest Sunrise.”
