Directed by Cynthia Erivo, Warner Bros. Picture Animation and Locksmith Animation musical comedy “Bad Fairies” has added Kylie Minogue, Jonathan Groff and Catherine Tate to its voice cast.
Minogue will voice Clowder the Witch, Groff will voice Robin Goodfellow, and Tate will voice Fairy Gothmother, and she will accompany Erivo as Jayne Staplegun in the animated film. Erivo shared the news at her Hollywood Bowl concert “Let Me Sing to You” on Thursday night.
The second half of the Bowl show opened with an orchestral piece built on Jayne’s song “Hard to Believe” from the film. This song was about a group of “delightfully defiant, rule-breaking fairies.” Erivo introduced Groff and Tate, then announced that Minogue, who was sitting in the audience, would be joining the cast.
“Bad Fairies” will be released on May 27, 2027, and production is currently underway in London with digital partner DNEG Animation.
The cast also includes Serrana Su-Ling Bliss as Fei Chang, James Acaster as Tags and Dee Bradley Baker as Groundbeef, and Ncuti Gatwa as Butterwort.
Set in contemporary London, “Evil Fairies” is directed by Megan Nicole Dong, co-directed by Olivier Staphylas, with an original screenplay by Deborah Frances-White. Tony Award winners Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss (“Six: The Musical”) write original songs, with music by Isabella “Machine” Summers of Florence and the Machine.
Warner Bros. “‘Evil Fairies’ is about characters who break the rules to do good, and Cynthia brings that spirit to everything she does, so there couldn’t be a better way to share this news than with her own voice from the Hollywood Bowl stage,” Pictures Animation President Bill Damaschke said in a statement. “With Kylie, Jonathan and Catherine joining us, we have a cast that is as brave and joyful as the film itself.”
“From the moment we began developing ‘Wicked Fairies,’ we knew it was exactly the kind of story Locksmith would tell: funny, surprising and full of heart,” said Natalie Fischer, CEO of Locksmith Animation. “Cynthia Erivo’s extraordinary voice has been the soul of this film since she joined us, and we’re thrilled to see Kylie, Jonathan, and Catherine bring their tremendous talents to these characters. We can’t wait for audiences to meet them next May.”
“I’m so excited to be a part of ‘Bad Fairies’ alongside the incredible Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Groff and the amazing voice cast,” Minogue said. “What about playing both the cat and the witch? It’s a little magical, a little mischievous, and a lot of fun.”
“Clowder needed to be incredibly dazzling and hilariously chaotic at the same time, and Kylie was always the dream,” said director Megan Nicole Dong. “He has made the character completely his own and brings this amazing energy to the cabin that comes out in every frame.”
Co-director Olivier Staphylas said: “Jonathan finds comedy and heart in one character, which is everything Robin Goodfellow needs, and there’s no one funnier than Catherine to play our Fairy Gothmother.” “Our animators hone the instincts and comedic timing of our amazing actors to create characters that seem both larger than life and truly real.”
While “KPop Demon Hunters” music producer Ian Eisendrath serves as executive music producer, the film’s creative team also includes producer Carolyn Soper, editor Sim Evan-Jones, director of photography James CJ Williams, character designer Uwe Heidschötter, story heads Rikke Asbjoern and Chris Garbutt, and production designers Justin Hutchinson-Chatburn and Mike Redman.
Minogue is repped by Jason Weinberg at Untitled and Polly Bhowmik at Context Management. Groff is represented at CAA by Brian Boone and Joe Michota. Tate is represented by Jeremy Barber at UTA and Robert Taylor at The Artists Partnership.
