Unlike his HBO network mate Bill Maher, who is embroiled in an awkward pissing match with dinner companion Donald Trump, John Oliver is laser-focused on the Nov. 3 midterm elections. Just last week, Oliver devoted much of “Last Week Tonight” to exposing disturbing ties between MAGA midterm candidates and neo-Nazis. And Sunday night focused not only on how Trump’s rallies have become increasingly erratic, but also on how many of the Republican midterm candidates are drifting away from Trump because of his low approval ratings.
At Trump’s final midterm election rally, he led the crowd by pledging to vote red in the midterm elections that began: “I pledge to the greatest president in the history of the United States of America, who loves us so much we can’t even breathe.” and then, “Do you know what happens if you don’t vote? You go to hell.”
“Okay, there is There’s so much out there “He gave up asking them to repeat a sentence that was clearly too long, right down to the line ‘He loves us so much he can’t even breathe,'” Oliver joked. “What the hell are Paramore talking about there in their lyrics?! As for the ‘vote or go to hell’ thing, I will say this: If it’s true, it’s huge. I imagine Jeffrey Epstein went to hell and was like, ‘Oh, because all this?’ Imagine he said. And Satan said: ‘No; lack of civic participation.’”
Trump has also implied several times that votes for Republicans in the midterm elections mean votes for him, but a recent report in The New Yorker found that “more than 99% of GOP ad spending now goes to spots that don’t mention Trump.”
When Kristen Welker asked Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers of Michigan on NBC News’ Meet the Press, “Is a vote for you a vote for the Trump agenda?” “I’m sorry, I’m having some difficulties with my headset,” Rogers said.
Cue Oliver: “Yeah, nice try Mike, but that was pretty obvious! I haven’t seen someone dodge a question this shamelessly since I spent three hours panting loudly at two complete lunatics who had never blinked an eye in their lives before showing a picture of convicted con artist Elizabeth Holmes and her partner Billy Evans in Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s documentary “You Can See Everything.”
And it turns out the “Last Week Tonight” crew has become so obsessed with the doctor that it’s getting in the way of the show.
“If you would like to talk about this film, please contact anyone who works here,” Oliver said, adding: “This has derailed our workflow to an unacceptable degree.”
