“Daily Show” correspondent Jordan Klepper asked President Donald Trump’s supporters to define communism in a recurring “Fingers on the Pulse” segment, and the results were … mixed.
Many of the people Klepper spoke to outside of various Trump midterm rallies said the key issue for them heading into November was “socialism” and “communism” infiltrating American society.
But when asked to define these terms, many people told Klepper that they could not give a precise definition.
“That’s a tough term, you know,” one man replied.
“That’s a tough term. It’s almost easier to just throw it away, evoke some fear, and then move on,” Klepper replied.
“Yes. I probably couldn’t really give you a definition,” the man said.
Some remained silent, while others said they had been free in the United States all their lives and did not want that to change. Another man said communism was “when they will control you.” One couple seemed stunned by Klepper’s style of questioning and responded simply by saying that the United States was the greatest country in the world.
Klepper then asked the people: government aid, especially in light of the president’s promise to pay $5,000 to every American if Republicans win the midterm elections.
“Don’t you like what’s being distributed?” Klepper asked a woman.
“No. There are some people who need help, but there are too many people who shouldn’t be involved,” the woman replied.
“How about a $5,000 check if the Republicans win? How about that?” asked Klepper.
“I think this would be great,” he said.
The couple Klepper spoke to earlier said they didn’t want the “free stuff” but were excited about the $5,000 checks.
But when asked about potential payouts, one person stood out.
“I’m not sure I like this,” the man said.
“Why don’t you like it?” said Klepper.
“Because it looks like he’s paying people to vote for him,” the man said.
“It looks like it,” Klepper said.
