LOS ANGELES– A woman accused of shooting up Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s home and crashing into a trailer the famous couple was in and the day care where their children were was found mentally competent to stand trial by a judge on Tuesday.
Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, 36, of Orlando Florida, has pleaded not guilty to more than a dozen felony charges stemming from the March shooting and trying to kill the singing superstar. No one was injured, but the bullets destroyed the Airstream trailer that Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were in at the time. The gunshots also hit the wall of the nursery where their young children were located.
During a brief hearing in Los Angeles County court, Judge Maria Cavalluzzi made the competency decision following Ortiz’s psychiatric evaluations.
Details of the mental evaluations were not directly discussed in court, and case documents containing those details were sealed. Ortiz returned to the regular criminal court process, which was suspended shortly after it began. He was ordered to report for a hearing on Wednesday.
Lawyers for both sides declined to comment outside court after the hearing.
Police and prosecutors allege that on March 8, Ortiz pulled up to the Tesla-singing superstar and his rapper partner’s Beverly Hills-area property, pointed an AR-15-style rifle out the window and fired at least 20 bullets into the property and a neighboring home.
Investigators found bullet holes in the trailer and in the exterior wall of the second-floor nursery of the home where the three children were with their nanny.
Investigators said Ortiz told them after his arrest later that day: “I wasn’t attempting murder.”
Ortiz is charged with 10 counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, one for each of the people at the two properties. He is also accused of shooting into an occupied vehicle or dwelling three times.
Authorities said Ortiz had no prior police record. Public records show he has been a licensed speech pathologist for more than a decade.
Authorities have not discussed any motive or revealed any connection between him and Rihanna.
