Hulu is developing a serial version of the 2020 movie “The Kid Detective.” Diversity learned privately.
Evan Morgan, who wrote and directed the film, is an executive producer on the project. Alex Berger will write the script and executive produce. Rachel Kaplan of Abescon Entertainment will also executive produce; Jonathan Bronfman and Will Woods, who produced the film, will also produce the series. Adam Brody, who starred in ‘The Kid Detective’, has not been attached at this time.
The show’s logline reads: “When a missing persons case brings back a childhood murder he was never able to solve, a washed-up former child detective gets one last chance to prove his best days are not behind him.”
Brody played the famous child detective Abe Applebaum in the film, which premiered at TIFF in 2020. The film was received positively by critics upon its release. In his review for him DiversityTomris Laffly wrote: “Greatly evoking a film noir-like vibe, classic scary villains, and femme fatale types from a strange small town full of grotesque mysteries, this gritty and often surprisingly witty film… grapples with themes of murder and abuse, as well as the existential fear of the central recluse who is sorely short of the promising life she thought she should have had in her younger days.”
Berger most recently worked on series such as “CIA” for CBS, as well as “The Perfect Double” for Netflix and “Quantum Leap” for NBC. His other credits include “Blindspot”, “The Mentalist”, “Franklin & Bash” and “Glenn Martin DDS”.
Kaplan was head of scripted TV at Keshet Studios before founding Abescon studios in 2020. Under that banner, he has executive produced shows such as “La Brea” at NBC and has projects in active development at various broadcasters and networks. During his time with Keshet, he fronted shows like “The Baker and the Beauty,” “Lincoln Rhyme: The Bone Collector’s Hunt” and “The Wisdom of the Crowd.”
Berger is represented by UTA, AB Fischer and Yorn Levine. Morgan is represented by Range and Verve.
