“Wildwood,” Laika’s first feature film in seven years after 2019’s “Missing Link,” was released in theaters on October 23. Directed by the studio’s president and CEO, Travis Knight, the fantasy film is adapted from the 2011 novel by Colin Meloy, lead singer of the indie rock band the Distanceists, and is illustrated by his wife, Carson Ellis.
Set in Portland, Oregon, the film follows Prue McKeel (voiced by Peyton Elizabeth Lee), a young girl who travels to a mysterious forest after her younger brother is kidnapped by a flock of crows. Accompanied by classmate Curtis (Jacob Tremblay), he discovers a hidden world populated by magical creatures, warring factions and dangerous enemies.
The star-studded voice cast also includes Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Angela Bassett, Awkwafina, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Amandla Stenberg, Jemaine Clement, Maya Erskine, Tom Waits and Richard E. Grant.
The film represents a major milestone for the Oregon-based animation studio, which has built a loyal fan base with its carefully crafted features including “Coraline,” “ParaNorman” and “Kubo and the Two Strings.” Laika described “Wildwood” as her most ambitious production to date, with 231 puppets and 136 locations created to bring Meloy’s fantasy world to life.
The limited edition “Wildwood” SteelBook is currently available for pre-order on Amazon, with a release date yet to be confirmed.
