Martin Scorsese’s “Cleopatra” never came to fruition, and the Angelina Jolie starrer was nixed by Seth Rogen and the Sony hack.
For those needing a refresher, Sony emails were hacked in November 2014 by a group hoping Sony would not release “The Interview,” the Seth Rogen comedy about a fictional assassination attempt on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
According to Scorsese, this caused some fallout in the industry, as he described in the first episode of the Tribeca original series “Crafty.”
“We were going to make Cleopatra for a while, but then they made fun of it. [Kim Jong Un]”Scorsese got mad and blew up everyone at Columbia,” he said. “Seth Rogen, right? Then he got angry and [it] He ruined Cleopatra.
While Rogen wasn’t directly responsible for the project’s cancellation, the resulting hack exposed thousands of emails from producer Scott Rudin to Sony’s Amy Pascal, including emails calling Jolie a “spoiled brat with minimal talent.”
Scorsese also said, “We were going to do this.” “Angelina Jolie. We were going. She was going to be Cleopatra VII. She was going to be really crazy.”
The script of the film was to be written by Eric Roth, the screenwriter of Scorsese’s 2023 film “Killers of the Flower Moon”.
