‘Odyssey’ Returns to Imax 70mm Theaters Again

Couldn’t make the cross-country trip to catch “The Odyssey” in Imax 70mm last summer? With luck, you’ll get another chance. Starting December 11, Universal is re-releasing Christopher Nolan’s epic on more than 1,000 screens in the US and Canada in all formats, including Imax and the coveted Imax 70mm.

Released on July 17, “The Odyssey” became Universal and Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever, grossing $626 million domestically and $1.8 billion worldwide despite being a three-hour, adult historical drama. It became the second highest-grossing film of 2026, after “Spider-Man: A Brand New Day”.

“The Odyssey” was also the first film to be shot entirely in Imax, setting two box office records for the company: the highest-grossing Imax film of all time ($550 million worldwide in a three-month period) and the largest domestic opening on Imax 70mm.

This isn’t the first time Universal has brought “The Odyssey” back to theaters. The film had a limited Imax and Imax 70mm run in early October.

Adapted from the ancient Greek poem, “Odyssey” tells the story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, who tells the difficult journey home to take back his throne after victorious in the ten-year-long Trojan War. Matt Damon takes on the role of Odysseus and stars Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal and many more.

“Odyssey” is sure to be a big contender during Oscar season. DiversityAwards editor Clayton Davis has the film nominated in nearly every major category, taking home awards for best picture, supporting actress, cast, cinematography, editing, sound and original score.
