During the first night of the ‘Unraveled Tour’ on Friday night, Olivia Rodrigo’s dress melted off her body in a surprise costume change on stage.
The “Drivers License” singer was performing her song “the Cure” at the People’s Bank Arena in Hartford, Connecticut; artificial rain fell, causing her white sleeveless dress to slowly crumble as she continued to sing.
According to footage captured by fans, 23-year-old Rodrigo stood on stage as her white dress parted from her outfit, eventually revealing a red corset bodysuit and micro miniskirt underneath.
“The first night of the Unraveled Tour was magical!!!! I’ve been planning this show in my head for the last year and seeing it all come together was a dream come true,” Rodrigo posted on Instagram on Saturday, along with images from the concert, including one of her melting dress.
“Thank you to everyone who came and showed so much love… Can’t wait to see more of you on the road!!!!” he added.
As rain fell around him, the dress appeared to melt directly onto the stage as Rodrigo stretched out his arms and allowed the costume to emerge.
The onstage transformation played off the “cure” lyric “I’m unraveled”, which ties the costume change to the name of her tour.
The dress was designed specifically for Rodrigo by Cyprus-born British designer Hussein Chalayan, who first created the water-reactive design for his Cuban-inspired Spring 2016 collection, according to Vogue.
Caglayan spent six months developing the dress, which reflected the country’s changing political and cultural landscape; this suit used uniform-like outer shells that melted to reveal new possibilities beneath.
According to Blast, Rodrigo’s Hartford set included six different looks and five costume changes.
The concert is divided into seasonal sections that open in a colorful, garden-inspired spring setting before moving into summer, fall and winter.
The production then switched to a purple twilight for the acoustic section, where Rodrigo wears a purple leather dress.
The rainy performance of “The Cure” became the center of attention of the Winter episode.
Elsewhere at the concert, Rodrigo wore a white babydoll dress and hot pink micro mini shorts with a cropped graphic tee, according to InStyle.
The North American tour will take Rodrigo to Pittsburgh, Washington, DC, Charlotte, North Carolina, Chicago, Boston and other cities.
It is scheduled to wrap up its run in February with 10 shows from February 11 to February 28 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
The “Good 4 u” singer previously addressed the backlash over her babydoll dresses, saying she finds it “really disturbing” that people sexualize her fully covered look.
“I didn’t think I looked sexy in this at all. It’s so cool. I feel like I look like Kathleen Hanna or Courtney Love, all these people who are my heroes,” Rodrigo told the New York Times’ “Popcast” in May.
