Taylor Swift’s Canceled Vienna Concerts Will Be the Subject of a Documentary

In August 2024, three dates of Taylor Swift’s epic global “Eras” tour in Vienna were canceled after authorities were warned of a terrorist plot.

The in-depth story of this planned jihadist attack, which was thwarted by Austrian authorities thanks in part to a tip from US intelligence, is now the subject of a high-profile documentary titled “Taylor Swift Wien,” co-directed by Andreas Pichler (“Tesla Files,” “Milk System”) and Veronika Kaserer (“Mafia Hunt – Germany’s ‘Ndrangheta”). “Wien” is the German word for Vienna.

According to its synopsis, “Taylor Swift Wien” will “juxtapose two very different youth subcultures: the inclusive, powerful world of Swifties and the world of toxic masculinity fueled by online radicalization and a desperate need for validation.”

This area led two male teenagers to devise a plot in which they intended to kill as many Taylor Swift concert attendees as possible using explosives and other weapons. The Vienna events were expected to attract more than 200,000 fans from around the world to the Ernst Happel Stadium in the Austrian capital.

Georg Tschurtschenthaler, chief creative officer of Germany’s Beetz Brothers, which co-produced the documentary with Austria’s Markand Media, says: Diversity The documentary will show the inside story of this failed terrorist attack from various perspectives. One is a “clock-ticking” thriller about how secret services, including the CIA, Britain’s MI5, and Austria’s and Germany’s agencies, managed to prevent the attack.

The other main story of the documentary is about the Swiftie community in Vienna. “We follow three female characters who are of course shocked when they learn that the concert has been cancelled,” Tschurtschenthaler said. In what becomes a tale of female empowerment, they organize psychological support for their fellow fans, contact the Austrian police and even meet with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer and members of the country’s secret service.

The third narrative element of “Taylor Swift Vienna” is the main perpetrator, a 19-year-old Austrian citizen of North Macedonian descent, then known simply as Beran A., who had sworn allegiance to the Islamic State. Tschurtschenthaler, who said he was “kind of radicalized through TikTok”, noted: “There is a new generation of young Islamist terrorists who are growing up around the world, who are intertwined with social media, and who are different from the old terrorists who were trained in Al Qaeda camps.”

Tschurtschenthaler stated that “Taylor Swift Vienna” will therefore be a blend of genres combining “a ticking-clock thriller, female empowerment of fans, and a depiction of the new Muslim manosphere” as a form of revenge against Western liberalism and feminism. The producer said that Beetz Brothers informed Swift management that this document was being prepared.

The distribution plan is for “Taylor Swift Wien” to air on German broadcaster ZDF in October 2027, followed by international availability.

Swift cautiously waited two weeks to make her first statement following the cancellation of her Aug. 8-10 Vienna concerts, calling it “devastating” in an Aug. 21 Instagram post commemorating the end of the European leg of the tour.

“The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of dread and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned to come to these shows,” Swift added. “But I was also grateful to the authorities because, thanks to them, we suffered not with lives but with concerts,” he continued: “In such cases, ‘silence’ actually means showing restraint and waiting to express oneself at the right time.”
