‘Call of Duty’ Movie Will Be a Rejection of Comic Book Movies and Superheroes

Paramount Pictures’ upcoming movie “Call of Duty,” based on the wildly popular video game franchise, definitely won’t feel like a comic book tentpole or turn soldiers into superheroes, director Peter Berg recently told ComicBook. The “Friday Night Lights” and “Lone Survivor” director is directing the video game adaptation from a screenplay by Taylor Sheridan. The movie will be inspired by the “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” games.

“If you really look at the missions and the stories and the characters like Captain Price, Soap, Ghost and Alex, these are complex people. These are not cartoon characters or comic books, and I mean no disrespect. These are very nuanced stories; there’s a real spirit to the ‘Modern Warfare’ universe. Yes, there’s violence and gear and equipment and killing. But underneath that, I think the game and its creators are really looking at the cost of war, the cost of fighting. For whatever reason, it feels like the real danger the rest of us and these guys carry to be a warrior who chooses to bear the burden.”

The “Modern Warfare” story, which began with “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare” in 2007, continues with the original World War II of the series. It was the first “Call of Duty” video game to break away from the World War II setting. Paramount has yet to reveal any details about the upcoming film adaptation, nor has any casting information been made available.

After Berg noted at CinemaCon earlier this year that “Taylor and I have deep ties to the special operations community,” a short video was released highlighting the video game series’ ongoing successes, including 1 billion players and $35 billion in lifetime revenue.

Paramount announced the “Call of Duty” movie for September 2025. The deal focuses on making a “Call of Duty” movie, but the deal also includes the potential to expand Paramount’s “Call of Duty” universe into film and television, sources said. The film is currently on Paramount’s June 30, 2028 release schedule.
