“Daily Show” host Jon Stewart was shocked Monday by reports that President Donald Trump offered to sell U.S. weapons to Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to Washington, D.C., last week.
“What’s happening?” an exasperated Stewart said as he placed his hands on his head. “How does America stay off the map sometimes? Even I…How do we not slide into the sea?”
“I need to hear it from the president himself,” Stewart said. “I don’t believe it. Did Trump really offer to sell weapons to China?”
Stewart later posted a clip of reporters asking Trump about the alleged offer.
“I’ve never heard of that. I’ll have to ask him,” Trump said. “Now, they’ll probably want to buy it because we make better equipment than them. Maybe that’s a good idea.”
This remark convinced Stewart.
“He definitely offered them guns,” Stewart said. “Oh my god― you can almost see Trump trying to calculate in his head: ‘If Iran beats us with the weapons we make, it’s like we won the war. I’m in.'”
