‘Love Story’S. Konstanz Zimmer tells about her private breast cancer battle.
“I never thought October would be #breastcancerawareness and I would honor it with my own story,” Zimmer, 55, wrote on Instagram on Sunday, October 4. “On March 13, while I was away from home, I heard these words from my doctor over Zoom: ‘You have DCIS, too. [referred] As stage 0 breast cancer.’ “The silence was deafening.”
She continued, “Here I was, surrounded by women sharing their secrets about Midlife realities, and I was keeping the biggest secret I’ve ever had. First, I had to call my husband and get home to tell our daughter in person.” (Zimmer as Colette Russ Lamoureux.)
Zimmer reflected on the “mental toll that followed,” sharing that it was “overwhelming on certain days” as he “started talking to a lot more doctors” than he would have preferred.
“I felt like my options were limited and many people suggested what was the quickest way to remove this mass as soon as possible, which was a mastectomy,” she wrote. “What if that’s not what I want? What if I want to save my breasts instead? Luckily, after speaking to @drkristifunk he said: ‘I think we can try lumpectomy, I believe I can get it out.’ “He was the first doctor to make me feel that what I wanted was important, and that made me cry with joy.”
“It took 3 surgeries over 3 weeks in a row but he did it, saved my breast and it looks beautiful!”
Amid his health battle, Zimmer shared that he was on a “very public press tour.” Love StoryWhile keeping his diagnosis and treatment secret. (Played by Zimmer Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy‘s mother, Ann-Marie Messinain FX’s series John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.)
“I later followed up my surgeries with radiation while celebrating my Emmy Nomination. So, me and @welcometoheidi decided to put my breast surgeon on our podcast @talkfiftytome because I know talking about it might remind women that they shouldn’t wait to please get checked out in every way possible until your symptoms show up. You can hear the full story on 10/6,” she wrote.
She continued, “I’m grateful to be CANCER-FREE and thankful to @cathrinewhite for catching me up for the first time since my diagnosis, celebrating what my body has given me over the last 7 months: pure joy and gratitude as well as pure shock and fear. From hospital gowns to Emmy glory, it’s been an amazing journey.”
Zimmer also shared several photos and dazzling looks of herself in a hospital, as well as a clip in which she reminisced about finishing a week-long radiation treatment.
“It’s super surreal,” he said in the video, adding that he was “just literally and figuratively breathing.”
