Quentin Tarantino’s first stage play, starring Sacha Baron Cohen, will be released in London

LONDON — Quentin Tarantino’s latest project is a flashy stage comedy starring “Borat” star Sacha Baron Cohen.

Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions announced Sunday that the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s debut stage play, “The Popinjay Cavalier,” will open in London’s West End in March.

It’s set in 1830s Europe, and the producers call the film “a rambling comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the great swashbuckler epics of stage and screen.”

The play will be directed by Tarantino and will mark the West Coast debut of Baron Cohen, creator of comic book characters Borat and Ali G.

“When the best director in the world calls, you don’t ask questions,” Baron Cohen said.

“The Popinjay Cavalier” begins previews on February 23 and opens at London’s Phoenix Theater on March 18.

Known for films such as “Reservoir Dogs,” “Pulp Fiction” and “Inglourious Basterds,” Tarantino has not directed a feature film since “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” was released in 2019.

He wrote the script for the sequel “The Next Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth”, which will be released in November. While it is directed by David Fincher, Brad Pitt plays the leading role of a former Hollywood stuntman.

In addition to the novel “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” Tarantino also wrote a novel for the new film, which will be published on December 8 by Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins.
