A judge ruled Tuesday that the case against the woman who authorities allege fired multiple bullets into pop singer Rihanna’s Beverly Hills mansion can move forward.
Florida woman Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, 36, was deemed mentally competent by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Maria Cavalluzzi, meaning her criminal case can proceed after a competency evaluation was delayed for more than four months.
Case documents containing Ortiz’s psychiatric evaluations were marked confidential and sealed.
Authorities allege that on March 8, Rihanna “put numerous lives at risk” by driving into her neighborhood in a white Tesla and firing approximately 20 shots from an assault-style rifle. Rihanna, her partner A$AP Rocky and their three young children were home at the time.
Police found bullet holes or blows on the exterior of Rihanna’s home, a fence, the windshield of her Airstream trailer, the patio area and the exterior wall of her child’s bedroom, according to a police document reviewed by City News Service.
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were in the trailer and their children were in the nursery at the time of the shooting, the Associated Press reported.
Court records show Ortiz faces 14 felony charges, including one count of attempted murder, 10 counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and three counts of shooting into a dwelling, vehicle or other target.
According to The Times, Ortiz had previously had multiple arrests in his home state. He was involved in a bankruptcy case in 2013, was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving in 2021, and was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and battery in 2023.
Although Ortiz had no known connection with Rihanna, he frequently shared posts about celebrities on social media. In February, he shared a meme claiming Rihanna had AIDS and tagged Rihanna in a post on Facebook, telling her to “say something directly to me instead of hanging around.”
Another hearing is scheduled for Wednesday morning at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, according to court records.
