Moving into a new home with my boyfriend meant making a lot of decisions together, but I admit that finding the perfect sofa was something I took particularly seriously. I wanted something comfortable enough for lazy Sundays and movie nights, but still chic enough to make our living room feel elevated. Some of my favorite nights are snuggling up in the corner of the division with my boyfriend and watching a football game, whether it’s Iowa vs. Iowa State or cheering on the Denver Broncos. When I’m controlling the TV, you’ll usually find me having a movie night, watching romantic comedies, e.g. 27 dresses instead. The extra-thick foam seat cushion has a soft sinking feel while still being supportive, while the feather fiber blend throw pillow makes it easy to get real comfort for hours.
The real test, however, is how effective it is when our living rooms are more crowded. We’ve had friends come over for soccer games and game nights, as well as family to visit, and there’s plenty of space for everyone to gather without feeling like we’re all crammed into one couch. I love that our area has become a natural place for everyone to hang out – exactly the kind of welcoming feel I want in a new home.
Admittedly, choosing the Oyster for such a heavily used sofa felt a bit risky. The bouclé interior is made from 100% polyester and treated with NuvaLuxe for added water resistance, which gives me added peace of mind when drinks, game day snacks, and movie night treats inevitably get on it. The cushions are also removable and reversible, so after a special weekend in the lounge, I can flip and fluff them up to make everything look put together again.
I also appreciate modular design more now that we’ve actually used it. The section consists of five separate pieces with finished sides, giving us the flexibility to rearrange it if we want to change the living room layout. This is a must-have feature that I probably wouldn’t have considered before shopping, but for purchasing such a large amount of furniture, I like knowing that it will fit into our home and not just work one way.
After a month of football games, game nights, family visits, rom-com marathons, and many lazy nights, I’m still glad we splurged. I got the dreamy oyster-tweed sectional I wanted, my boyfriend got the spacious, really comfortable sofa he wanted, and we both got a gathering place that our friends and family can enjoy too. I can’t tell yet what it will look like in a few years, but so far it’s making our new living room feel more like home.
