Oh, this Open.
The Weekend Update segment of the latest episode of “Saturday Night Live” dove right into the middle of the excitement surrounding the upcoming November release of “Grand Theft Auto VI.”
As co-host Colin Jost noted, most video games, with the exception of “Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time,” have moved their release dates to avoid competition with the long-awaited game.
In true “SNL” fashion, the update desk challenged the star characters of both games — Link from “Zelda,” played by Mikey Day in a rather ridiculous cosplay, and Jason from “GTA6,” played by Marcello Hernandez — to the challenge. And it didn’t take long for absolute chaos to ensue.
“I respect all the Zelda games, they’re all good, but they’re all TMPNG: Too Many Puzzles, No Guns,” Jason says at one point during the showdown, before pulling out a toy rocket-propelled grenade. “‘Look at what you can buy from a store in GTA 6. You can buy it, man! You can buy it from a store like it’s Advil!’
Link tries to counter Jason’s attack.
“You want to talk bad? How about the fairy in the box?” Link shouts. “You can buy this! It takes three magic frogs and you This!”
You must agree. Link has a point here.
“GTA 6” is planned to revolve around Jason and his partner Lucia as they take over the fictional Vice City in a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style dynamic. “Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time” is a remake of a 1998 game in which Link works to defeat the evil monster Ganondorf.
The two fight in front of Jost and Weekend Update co-host Michael Che, starting off with a rather violent argument about Link’s outfit.
“The only way this will be like ‘Barbenheimer’ is if I blow it up and it looks like a little blonde girl,” Jason says in response to Jost’s comparison to “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” a double feature that premieres on the same day in July 2023.
Link immediately disagrees with Jason, and he retorts, “What do you mean? It’s like she’s wearing a little green dress.”
“It shows what you know,” Link said defensively. “This is my adventure tunic. God, you are so beautiful idiot.”
They also compare their lifestyles. While Jason boasts about stealing vehicles, robbing banks, and womanizing, Link shows off his very different routine.
“Meanwhile, I woke up in Hyrule, bought magic beans from a shopkeeper, and played my ocarina,” Link says.
By the end of their discussion, we can say that the games sound pretty equal.
The sixth game of the “Grand Theft Auto” series comes 10 years after its predecessor. It will be released on Nov. 19, about two weeks after “Zelda’s” release on Nov. 5.
