The North American box office took a bit of a hit this weekend as the Halloween holiday drove audiences away from theaters on Saturday. Ticket sales were dominated by the Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” and the DC Studios film “Clayface” and are not expected to top $63 million, according to the studio’s estimates on Sunday. This marks the third lowest-earning weekend of the year.
“You Can See Everything” had a slight lead over “Clayface” in its third weekend in theaters with $10.6 million from 2,655 locations. Directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, the film has grossed $63.9 million to date against a reported $7 million production budget and continues to be a hard-to-buy buzz. However, this is the first time it has reached No. 1.
“Clayface,” about the Batman villain, bested “You Can See Everything” by just $200,684. The Warner Bros. release dropped 57% in theaters in its second weekend. This brings its domestic earnings to $44.1 million against a reported $44 million budget.
Third place was taken by Laika’s animated film “Wildwood,” which opened in 150 theaters in its second weekend and reached 3,100 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. The Fathom Entertainment release brought in an estimated $7.5 million in revenue, down 39% from its first weekend, bringing its total to $25.9 million.
Comedy fantasy “Wicker,” starring Olivia Colman as a woman (Alexander Skarsgård) who commissions a basket maker to make her a wicker husband, ranked fourth with $4.1 million. “Street Fighter,” now in its third weekend, was in the top five with $3.2 million.
In notable expansions, the acclaimed Sundance indie “The Only Pickpocket in New York” added more than 1,000 locations in its second weekend and earned $1.9 million, breaking into the top 10.
Netflix also reported earnings from the theatrical release of the World War II movie “The Mosquito Bowl,” which earned $455,000 from 349 locations. “La Bola Negra” earned $418,000 in its third weekend from just under 38 locations, bringing its total to $1.2 million.
The domestic box office is up over 17% from last year, with nearly $8.5 billion to date.
