Cher responds to Michael Douglas’ claim that Glenn Close deserved an Oscar for ‘Moonstruck’

Cher holds no grudges against Michael Douglas after the actor suggested Glenn Close deserved her 1988 best actress Oscar.

“Cher adores Michael Douglas,” a rep for Cher, 80, said after Douglas suggested her “Fatal Attraction” co-star should have taken home the award.

Douglas, 82, made the announcement Friday on “The Graham Norton Show,” where he sat down with Close, Kieran Culkin and Naomi Ackie.

The conversation turned to Close’s long history of Oscar disappointments after the actress joked that she received an honorary Academy Award at the Governors Awards in November because the members “probably didn’t want to feel guilty anymore.”

The 79-year-old “101 Dalmatians” actor has received eight Oscar nominations but has yet to take home an award.

Douglas, who starred with Close in the 1987 thriller “Fatal Attraction,” quickly reflected on one particular loss.

“She should have won for ‘Fatal Attraction,'” he said, referring to Close’s performance as Alex Forrest.

He stated that Close received her fourth Oscar nomination for this film, and Cher received the best actress award for “Moonstruck”.

Presenter Graham Norton replied: “Oh, wow.”

“I know. We all said so,” the “Basic Instinct” actor quipped, prompting laughter from the panel and the audience.

“Shadow! Shadow, man!” Ackie joked.

Douglas went on to describe Close’s work in “Fatal Attraction” as one of the “greatest performances of all time.”

Norton offered his own take on Cher’s Oscar victory, joking: “But Cher’s got some gray hair, that’s how it is.”

Cher beat Close, Holly Hunter (“Broadcast News”), Sally Kirkland (“Anna”) and Meryl Streep (“Ironweed”) for the 1988 best actress award.

In “Moonstruck,” Cher played Loretta Castorini, a widow who falls in love with Ronny, the younger brother of the man she agreed to marry in Brooklyn.

Nicolas Cage played Ronny, while Danny Aiello played Loretta’s fiancé, Johnny.

“Fatal Attraction,” meanwhile, earned six Oscar nominations, including best picture, best director and best actress, but failed to win a competitive award.

Cher had previously earned a best supporting actress nomination for the 1983 film “Silkwood.”

Douglas also had reason to celebrate at the 1988 ceremony; He won the best actor award for his role as Gordon Gekko in “Wall Street.”

Close is finally set to receive an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards in November.
