Netflix’s “A Different World” remake has been renewed for a second season.
The comedy series, a revival of the 1987-1993 NBC sitcom of the same name, follows a new generation of students at HBCU Hillman College and focuses on Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert’s youngest child, Deborah (Maleah Joi Moon).
“A Different World’s” Season 2 synopsis reads: “After transformative summers, Deborah and her Hillman classmates return to campus for sophomore year with a ‘New Year, New Me’ attitude, but they find themselves faced with past resolutions, uncertain futures, new loves and friendships, and deeper questions of purpose…all the while getting themselves into a whole bunch of new messes, of course.”
In addition to Moon, “A Different World” stars Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece and Chibuikem Uche. Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison reprized their roles as Dwayne and Whitley from the original series, alongside Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer, Ajai Sanders, Jada Pinkett Smith and others. Felicia Pride became the series’ creator, showrunner, executive producer and writer, while Debbie Allen, who directed 83 episodes of the original series, returned as director and executive producer.
“It is so validating to be supported by our amazing audience,” Pride said in a statement. “We’re so excited to return to the Hillman and continue telling meaningful and heartfelt stories that resonate across generations. I’m so excited for our amazing cast and hard-working crew.”
Allen added: “YES! HELLAH! The people and Netflix have spoken. ‘A Different World’ brought what everyone needed: joy, romance, relevance, originality and HEART! Thank you for putting us in the top 10 worldwide! Now get ready! We’re coming back to you with Season 2!!”
