Hong Kong’s Cappu Films handled worldwide sales for Shan Jiang’s whimsical romance “Ephemera,” which had its world premiere at Tribeca’s U.S. narrative competition this year.
Cappu is shopping the film at the Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Content and Film Market.
Yvonne Shuyu Zhang and Shu-Yi play two young women whose lives are on the verge of taking different directions when they meet. Asher is preparing to move from Shanghai to Los Angeles. Later, an invitation to dance teacher Tori turns into a night of exploring the city and getting to know each other. Even as the move approaches, a rapport is established between them.
“‘Ephemera’ is about a short-lived romance that doesn’t want to end. Having Cappu behind the film means that the ephemerality we capture has a chance of becoming permanent,” said Jiang.
Jiang wrote, directed and produced the film along with Yinx Zhou and Sol Ye. Jane Zheng and Alex Steyermark are executive producers. ArtChais Technology Co., Ltd. brokered the connection between the filmmakers and Cappu.
“Shan captures the excitement and uncertainty of an unexpected connection with warmth and honesty. We look forward to introducing the film to buyers in Busan and helping it find audiences around the world,” said Janice Woo of Cappu Films.
Cappu is in distribution talks with buyers in the market. Its jurisdiction covers all territories, but the rights offered in each will be approved separately.
The company’s Busan slate also includes “Fox Hunt,” opposite Tony Leung Chiu-wai; “Operation Doolittle,” a nine-episode miniseries about World War II espionage; Erica Xia-Hou’s “Banr” selected for Slamdance; martial arts title “Lion Fist”; Joy Hopwood’s Australian drama “Her Last Laugh”; and action comedy “Zombie Plane,” starring Vanilla Ice, Sophie Monk and Chuck Norris.
